Calm.
The cup you make when you sit down.
Not an evening category and not a morning one. This is the pot you put on after a big meal, in the flat part of the afternoon, or when you want ten minutes that aren’t about anything.
What goes in the pot
All caffeine-free, so the hour doesn’t matter. Most of these are the after-meal cup somewhere in the world — that is the tradition they come out of.
Peppermint
Sharp, cooling and bracingly clean. The standard European choice after a heavy plate, and the easiest herbal to like.
Chamomile
The same flower as the Sleep page, drunk earlier. Round, apple-sweet and gentle enough to have twice in an afternoon.
Tulsi
Holy basil — peppery, clove-like and slightly sweet. Grown in courtyards across India and steeped as an everyday household cup.
Lemon verbena
The brightest lemon of any herb here, without sourness. Common after dinner across southern Europe and South America.
Fennel
Sweet and liquorice-like. Chewed as seed or steeped as tea across South Asia for exactly this moment in a meal.
The honest version
None of it has to be medicinal to be worth doing. Sitting still with something warm for ten minutes after eating is most of the effect, and the tea is mainly what gives you a reason to.
